Facts about Immigrants in the US
Immigrants make up around 13.9% of the US population. Of that 13.9%, 23% are undocumented. This equates to 3.3% of the US population being undocumented immigrants. According to the IRS, Individuals who are ineligible for an SSN, such as immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally and not authorized to work, can apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number(ITIN), regardless of their immigration status. An ITIN can only be used for federal tax purposes and does not grant work authorization, change immigration status or provide social security benefits. According to a report by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP). In 2022, undocumented immigrants paid $96.7 billion in federal, state, and local taxes, with the majority ($59.4 billion) going to the federal government. Per person, that equates to nearly $9,000.
